Rock climbing on traditional (‘trad’) gear means the leader placing their own protection as they climb. ‘Trad’ climbing as it is known by its enthusiasts is a wonderful way of experiencing the outdoors, the mountain or even sea cliff environment.
Beginners Outdoor Climbing

Improvers Climbing Course
Based in: Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, or Lake District
Aim: To further develop the indoor climber’s transition to outside rock climbing. To consolidate outdoor specific movement skills and ability in seconding routes. To develop an awareness of gear placement and optionally start to progress towards rigging top ropes.

Leading Climbing Skills
Based in: Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, or Lake District
Aim: To promote safe practice and good judgement in progressing towards leading outdoors on leader placed protection. Although many clients will progress to leading within the weekend some may not, however, all clients will have developed the skills necessary to place sound gear and build sound belays and the understanding of the process of lead climbing.
- Movement skills.
- Placement of gear – learning tools to develop judgement in sound gear placement of all types.
- Placement of gear whilst on a climb.
- Selection of anchors.
- Linking anchors effectively to belay safely and effectively from the top.

Climbers Self Rescue
Based in: Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, or Lake District.
Aim: to develop and awareness of the problems that may occur during multipitch rock climbing. Promote sound judgement and develop skills needed for the client to swiftly deal with problems that may occur during a multipitch route.
- Tying off the belay plate.
- Prussick knots and their uses.
- Tactics to avoid knots and rope-spaghetti and how to sort it if it happens.
- Retreating safely.
- Escaping the system safely.
- Systems for hoists.
- Systems for lowers.
- Assisting a struggling second through the crux.

Introduction to Multipitch Rock Climbing
Based in: Lake District or North Wales.
Aim: Inspired by Britain’s biggest cliffs and want to explore and climb them? This course will safely expose you to some of the best multi-pitch routes in the Lake District or North Wales. You’ll learn to build belays in awkward situations, manage the stance to avoid a tangle of ropes, experience abseil descents and the wonders of some of the UK’s best mountains.
Depending on your prior knowledge and experience we will develop and work on some or all of the following skills:
- Anchor selection and linking to build stances.
- Stance management.
- Route reading.
- Safe, energy efficient movement on multipitch routes.
- Abseil descents.
- Tactics for scramble descents.
Am I ready yet? A good level of fitness. Destination and the routes we climb will be agreed with you depending on your level of experience.
