Lake District Navigation Course
Venues: From Grassmere in the Lake District or From Horton in Ribblesdale in the Western Yorkshire Dales.

Navigation is a fundamental mountain skill which once you have learnt can greatly increase the enjoyment of a day out in the fells and mountains. Our intro course covers the full spectrum of skills required to navigate using a map and compass in the mountains. This course will help you have the confidence of knowing how to get around the mountains when the cloud is low or it gets dark or if you get lost. These courses are based outdoors on the fells where you will have the maximum opportunity to put the skills you are learning into practice under the guidance of your instructor.
Introductory Navigation will cover the following skills and techniques:
- Understanding the nature of a map, scales and symbols.
- Taking a 6 figure grid reference and allocating a grid reference onto the map.
- Orienting the map with and without a compass.
- Using the oriented map to determine the direction of travel and features around.
- Develop techniques and strategies for navigational legs.
- Tools and techniques to estimate distance on the ground and the map
- Relocation using simple techniques.
- Develop your understanding of contours and matching land formations to their map representation.
- Uses and limitations of electronic navigation aids.
- Planning a safe suitable walk.
